Over the past few days here at the blog, we’ve been giving you sneak peeks into what will be up for grabs this Free Comic Book Day at Fully Booked. We started with a list that had younger kids in mind. And we also talked about the ‘heavyweights’, titles that we think will be in high demand. We’ve also got a list that’s high on the fun quotient, something that even non-comic readers will get a kick out of.
Now, we get a little more intermediate with some handbooks and guides that will help you get more well-versed in the comics multiverse. But to begin, we want to share with you an anthology that is certain to be awesome:
1. Archaia Hardcover Anthology
‘Don’t judge a book by its cover’, goes the age-old adage. And this is the perfect example of that (I mean, would you look at that cover? It’s pretty simple!). Archaia offers its top titles in a single book, including Mouse Guard (which was a massive success last year!), Jim Henson’s legendary The Labyrinth, Rust, and whole lot more. If you are a fan of fantasy, fairy tales, and beautiful eye candy art style, this Archaia book is for you.
And now, onto the handbooks and guides:
2. Valiant Universe Handbook 2014
This is Valiant Comics’ first handbook release, a look into the histories of the heroes and villains of their universe. “Featuring artwork from a ‘murderer’s row’ of comics brightest talents: Doug Braithwaite, Bryan Hitch, J.G. Jones, Esad Ribic, Clayton Crain, Clayton Henry, and more!”
3. Overstreet’s Comic Book Marketplace 2014
A behind the scenes look into some well-loved comics, this is what we can expect from this book:
A stunning visual representation of Batman’s 75th anniversary, a look (way) back at the origins of The Winter Soldier, a 20th anniversary chat with Billy Tucci about Shi, a look at the long and sometimes hidden history of Archie’s “Red Circle” line, a forgotten first appearance, and much more are featured in this FCBD 2014 issue of Overstreet’s Comic Book Marketplace.
4. Raising a Reader!
Making a case for comics, this book informs educators and parents alike about the benefits of comics as part of child education, including the sorts of skills they help develop, the resources available for using comics in education, and more.
5. Bleeding Cool Guide to Collecting Comics
An ideal book to introduce new and would-be fans, this is “the perfect tool for local comic shops to introduce new fans to the hobby. With features on collecting, shopping, preserving, and developing their collections…” (More info on FreeComicBookDay.com)
6. Help the CBLDF Defend Comics
(Taken from FreeComicBookDay.com)
For over 25 years, the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund has fought to protect your right to read, and this year we bring our mission to Free Comic Book Day, with a light-hearted look at a serious topic. Explore censorship of comics with some of today’s most talented creators!
A celebration of comics and comic store culture! This is the guidebook for curious cats and newbies. Previews shows you the way into a whole new world of fun.
We know you’re excited for FCBD 2014. What titles have you got your eye on? Just a reminder: you can get three free comics if you line up at Fully Booked Bonifacio High Street, and one free comic at all other participating stores. Remember that not all titles are available at all shops, so the comics you want are subject to availability. Looking forward to seeing all of you at FCBD 2014!
