With Guardians of the Galaxy coming to Philippine theaters this Wednesday, we wanted to help set the stage for this rag-tag group of… heroes? What has us excited, why, and — most importantly — what can you read to complete your Guardians of the Galaxy experience.
Here are 5 Things to know about the film.
1. Star Lord is just a regular guy
OK, so perhaps ‘regular’ is stretching it. In the comics, Peter Quill a.k.a. ‘Star Lord’ is half human and half alien. The truth is that we don’t know whether that will be the case in the movie. As Chris Pratt said in one interview, “Peter Quill is not a superhero.” Pratt goes on to explain that Star Lord merely charms his way out of the crazy circumstances he finds himself in. If you look to this generation’s most popular characters — Batman and Iron Man — what these guys have in common is their humanity. No powers, just guts. Look to see this quality from Star Lord.
2. We’ll be learning more about Thanos
Remember that guy who nobody recognized in the post-credits scene of Joss Whedon’s, The Avengers? The guy who made the whole world simultaneously ask, ‘Who on earth is that guy?’ Well… that guy. We’re probably going to see a bit more of him. His familial ties to one of the Guardians will bring the conflict a little closer to home, but ultimately expect Guardians to be a pawn piece in the development of a third Avengers movie.
3. Expect the most sci-fi Marvel movie to date
Watch the latest trailer below. Space ships and dogfights, the Nova Corps & blaster guns. Check, check, check, and… check. 🙂
4. What you should be reading
Marvel does a good job at resetting their comic book series around the time of the films, so you really could pick up the current run of Guardians. Lots of great gunslinging raccoon in this one.
Prelude graphic novels kinda have a bad rap, what with the movie-tie in covers and overt marketing push. However, if you want the unique experience of watching the movie and picking up all the little details and easter eggs that prelude movie tie-ins tend to bring, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Prelude is worth a try. As Marvel Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. would have us believe, “Everything is connected.”
The 2006 crossover Annihilation is one of the great comics events of the last decade, and this is where the modern Guardians of the Galaxy team first emerged.

5. Marvel is clearly proud of this work
Over last week’s 2014 San Diego Comic Con, Chris Pratt announced that the Guardians of the Galaxy sequel is already in the works for 2017. We think that this shows that this is not a one-shot (to borrow a comics term), they’re clearly proud of the work and expect it to do very well. Even Iron Man 2 was not green-lit this quickly!
See you at the cinema!
