Sometimes, the best stories are found not through words in writing, but through the words spoken by a friend. That’s just what Patrick Ness achieves in his newest masterpiece, Release. The novel was written in such a way that was intimate, yet it manages to hold back in all the right moments, much like one does with their friends.

Release focuses on the lead character Adam Thorn and the struggles he faces within his family, his faith, his friendship, love, and ultimately himself. What I liked about it most was how real it was, and how his struggles seemed like it could be something someone in your life is also worried about. It’s relatable, in one way or another, and that’s what makes it so effective.

Adam’s family is the perfect setting to explore his thoughts—or lack of it—for the pressures they impose on their son. Of course, his sassy sarcasm is always an interesting thing to encounter as well. Then there’s Enzo, an extra (emphasis on the ex) to the situation of his already cloudy heart. Which again, seems far too realistic to be a work of art. Now couple that with his best friend, Angela’s quirky point of view and dialogue, then you have yourself a pretty cool lead.

Finally, there’s the Queen, in all of her vengeful glory. It’s very interesting how the story was written to support her quest, how the faun follows her as she sets and follows her own trail as she struggles to find her memory, reality, and identity. The shifts between both storylines adds an extra layer of fiction, as it alternated with the reality of Adam’s narrative. The build-up was pretty climatic, as the shifts between these two turned shorter and shorter until eventually, it all meshed into one.

Overall, I admired the courage Patrick Ness had in order to discuss topics that aren’t really easy to work with. It was a refreshing take and I’d recommend this 10/10. If anything, I found my release in here.

Patrick Ness is one of the many writers whom I admire the most. I’m so glad my closest chum/book buddy introduced me to his greatest works which depict the honest reality of life. He captures the readers’ hearts wholly, making us realize life is worth living for. This is why I loved and still love More Than this!

My favorite book written by Patrick Ness is “The Rest of Us Just Live Here”. Why? The book seems different on how he narrates the story, and there is no words to explain that. 🙂

‘A Monster Calls’ has engraved its deep and dark stories in me. The kindness we see may hide wickedness, and the evil that we witness may be justified. Our story, no matter how good or evil, is our truth, and we cannot ever deny this. The book truly sweeps you out of the reality and opens your mind to a whole new depth.

  15. The Chaos Walking Trilogy! It’s a different take on dystopian world. The story would keep you at the edge of your seat and I feel like it’s too underrated in the Philippines which is sad.

I have not read any Patrick Ness books and I’d like to start with Release. I have recently decided to take a weeklong break from work to go on a road trip to step away from the hustle and bustle in life and to reflect. The past few three years had been pretty hectic as I try to strike a balance between family, career, and my overall well being. I’m sure that this book will be a great company as I embark on that road trip!

  17. I really loved The Rest of Just Live Here and I’m super excited to read A Monster Calls. I would love to include Release to my to-read list.

My favorite book by Patrick Ness is A Monster Calls. It was very emotional and it made me realize a lot of things. Patrick Ness has this very particular way of making readers fall in love with his books, his writing is honest and magical at the same time. It deals with many issues but does it in a smooth way. Patrick Ness is a genius in literature.
