Can you believe that it’s been a year since the Kevin Kwan Manila Book Tour? That was such a fun and crazy ride — the five days of signings, where Kevin read bits from Rich People Problems and shared some news on the Crazy Rich Asians movie; Kevin taking over our Twitter; a few fabulous lunches, dinners, and tea time with some special fans; and of course, Kevin getting to meet his readers here in Manila.

Now the hype is high again, with Crazy Rich Asians hitting the big screen next week! Read on to know what a few us here at Fully Booked are excited about.

On a scale of one to ten, how excited are you to see Crazy Rich Asians on the big screen? Which part are you most excited about?

10. I’ve been a fan of Kevin’s books since it was first published. It’s exciting to see the characters of the books come to life… especially since the movie is an all Asian cast.

Which character do you think has been cast perfectly? Why?

Michelle Yeoh. Love her! She nails every role she has played on the screen.

Will you be re-reading the book before seeing the movie? Why or why not?

No, unfortunately there’s no time for me to re read the book given my hectic schedule. Also, it would be nice for some details which I may have forgotten to be a “surprise”.

Without spoilers, what’s the one thing you want the movie to get right?

I would love for the movie to closely depict what Kevin Kwan has brilliantly written in his book. He’s a dear friend of mine and I love his work! No doubt that this romantic comedy film will be heartwarming and full of insights.

On a scale of one to ten, how excited are you to see Crazy Rich Asians on the big screen? Which part are you most excited about?

11! Crazy Rich Asians is such a hilarious book so I’m really excited to see this laugh riot! I’m looking forward to seeing how the movie will show the absurd antics that made the book so enjoyable — especially Araminta’s bachelorette party.

Which character do you think has been cast perfectly? Why?

They all seem to really suit their roles but having Michelle Yeoh play Eleanor Young is going to be such a treat. She always brings grounded-ness to any character she plays and I think her comedic talents are seriously underrated.

Will you be re-reading the book before seeing the movie? Why or why not?

I’ll reread my favorite parts, just for fun.

Without spoilers, what’s the one thing you want the movie to get right?

I love the book’s satirical tone and the way it pokes fun at how crazy (some) rich people behave. I hope that translates well onscreen and that the movie doesn’t just indulge in glitz and glamour but is also self-aware about how outrageous the lifestyle and conduct of the 1% can be. I know you only said one thing but this is a close second—the movie must get the clothes right! 🙂

On a scale of one to ten, how excited are you to see Crazy Rich Asians on the big screen? Which part are you most excited about?

Around 7. My excitement over movie adaptations is always tempered by the fear that they’ll get it wrong. I read Crazy Rich Asians when it was first released, so honestly I don’t remember that many details. I’m most excited to see what “crazy rich” looks like, and if I will come away from the movie with the same feeling I had after I finished the book. I’m also curious to see how much of the author I’ll find in the movie.

Which character do you think has been cast perfectly? Why?

Michelle Yeoh!

Will you be re-reading the book before seeing the movie? Why or why not?

No, usually I just want to enjoy the movie as a movie.

Without spoilers, what’s the one thing you want the movie to get right?

I want the movie to be successful (does that count as getting something right?), and hopefully it will interest people in reading more of Kevin Kwan’s books.

On a scale of one to ten, how excited are you to see Crazy Rich Asians on the big screen? Which part are you most excited about?

I have to say before reading the book I wasn’t really excited in watching the film, but now that I’ve read it and I have a clue on how crazy and “dramatic” it’s going to be my excitement is at a 10.

Which character do you think has been cast perfectly? Why?

I think Awkwafina is so perfect as Rachel’s best friend Peik Lin and Gemma Chan exudes the elegance that I expect from anyone who portrays Astrid Leong–Teo.

Will you be re-reading the book before seeing the movie? Why or why not?

I actually just finished reading it and I really hope the movie gives justice to the book.

Without spoilers, what’s the one thing you want the movie to get right?

I’m excited about how the movie will capture Singapore. Reading how Kevin Kwan described the food and the places really made me want to buy a plane ticket to Singapore.

On a scale of one to ten, how excited are you to see Crazy Rich Asians on the big screen? Which part are you most excited about?

Moderately excited (6 -7). Astrid is my favorite character in the books and I am excited to see her on the big screen.

Which character do you think has been cast perfectly? Why?

I think Nico Santos as Oliver T’sien is perfectly cast though it didn’t occur to me until he was cast. I’ve only seen him on Superstore and the snark and sass he brings to that role are what I have in mind for cousin Oliver.

Will you be re-reading the book before seeing the movie? Why or why not?

No. Re-reading the book might spoil the movie. 😛

Without spoilers, what’s the one thing you want the movie to get right?

I want the movie to get the visuals right. The luxurious life of the Singapore’s ultra-rich is as much a character in the book as all of Nick’s family and friends. And I want Colin and Araminta’s wedding to live up to how I imagined it in my head.

On a scale of one to ten, how excited are you to see Crazy Rich Asians on the big screen? Which part are you most excited about?

ELEVEN. I remember while I was reading the book, I could see the scenes play out vividly in my head. Kevin Kwan has a very cinematic way of writing, and it really helped with the kind of story he was telling. Though I know I’ll never be part of those circles (let’s be real here), I felt deeply immersed in their shining, shimmering, splendid world while reading.

I guess that’s also what I’m most excited about. I haven’t picked up the book in a while, so I don’t remember much of the details. But I do know that I can’t wait to dive into this crazy rich world again.

Which character do you think has been cast perfectly? Why?

Gemma Chan. She is exactly the kind of gorgeous I expected Astrid to be. Also Henry Golding. I was a little skeptical at first (and I’m not exactly a big Nick fan), but after seeing a few clips, I am completely sold. I think I might actually like his Nick over book Nick.

Will you be re-reading the book before seeing the movie? Why or why not?

I was planning to, but I’ll probably forget. Lol! I’ll just let the film surprise me!

Without spoilers, what’s the one thing you want the movie to get right?

THE FASHION. Especially Astrid’s. Also, the moment we first get to see Tyersall Park. I’m expecting a lot of jaw-dropping here. And overall, I hope the film has that good ol’ fashioned rom-com slash family dramedy feel. The world could use a little more of that right now.
